Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has cautioned the national government against plans to establish an Ebola quarantine centre in Kenya, warning that such a move could expose the country to significant public health risks.
Speaking in Mutituni during an inspection tour of county development projects, Governor Wavinya argued that hosting Ebola patients in Kenya would place an already strained healthcare system under immense pressure due to the highly infectious nature of the disease.
She urged President William Ruto's administration to reconsider the decision, saying the safety and well-being of Kenyans should take precedence over any other considerations.
"The Government must carefully evaluate the potential health implications of establishing an Ebola quarantine facility in the country. The welfare of Kenyans should remain the top priority," she said.
Her remarks came amid ongoing debate over plans to set up the facility in Nanyuki, with reports indicating that President Ruto's administration has maintained its position despite a High Court order suspending the project. The government has cited Kenya's strategic and diplomatic relations with the United States as one of the factors informing its decision.
Governor Wavinya also called on citizens to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to public health measures, drawing parallels with the precautions observed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said Kenyans should be prepared to observe safety protocols similar to those implemented during the 2020 coronavirus outbreak in order to minimize potential health risks.
At the same time, the governor expressed concern over the rising cases of femicide in the country, noting that approximately 200 women had lost their lives since the beginning of the year.
She urged law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
Additionally, Wavinya challenged parents to play a more active role in mentoring and guiding their children amid increasing cases of indiscipline and unrest in schools.
She emphasized that strong parental involvement remains critical in shaping responsible and disciplined young people and addressing emerging social challenges facing the country.
