The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has formally ushered in a new chapter in its political journey with the appointment of Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka as its Party Leader, months after the death of its founding leader and long-time opposition chief Raila Odinga.

The leadership transition was ratified during a joint session of the Coalition Council and the National Executive Committee held on Monday, February 2, 2026, under the chairmanship of Uhuru Kenyatta, the Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya and Chairperson of the coalition.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Azimio said the decision to hand Kalonzo the reins reflects the coalition’s resolve to ensure continuity, stability, and renewed focus following the loss of Raila Odinga, whose political legacy shaped the alliance and Kenya’s opposition politics for decades.

Alongside Kalonzo’s appointment, the coalition approved Caroli Omondi, MP for Suba, as the new Secretary General, and Phillip Kisia as Executive Director. The changes have since been formally communicated to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) .

Political observers view Kalonzo’s elevation as a pivotal moment for Azimio, coming at a time when the coalition is seeking to regroup and redefine its identity in the post–Raila Odinga era. A seasoned politician and former Vice President, Kalonzo is expected to rally the coalition’s diverse partners while consolidating its role on the national political stage.

“These appointments have been necessitated by evolving political circumstances, which have called for prompt and strategic leadership enhancements,” the coalition said, adding that the goal is to reposition and revitalize Azimio, strengthen internal cohesion, and enhance its effectiveness.

Azimio reaffirmed its commitment to the ideals long championed by Raila Odinga, including inclusive governance, democratic principles, and people-centered leadership, noting that the new leadership team will carry forward that vision while adapting to current political realities.

As Kalonzo Musyoka takes over the helm, the coalition says it remains focused on unity, renewal, and service to all Kenyans—signalling both continuity and transition in one of the country’s most influential political formations.
