Matungulu Member of Parliament Stephen Mule has launched a scathing attack on the current education reforms, accusing the government of presiding over a confused and unrealistic system that is hurting Kenyan parents and children.

Speaking on Sunday after attending a church service at Tala Market Catholic Church in Matungulu Sub-county, Machakos County, Mule called on President William Ruto and Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to urgently address what he termed as a “mess” in the education sector.

“The education system is in total confusion, and it is parents and children who are suffering,” Mule said. “There is an urgent need for clear, realistic direction to safeguard the future of our children and the nation.”

The MP particularly took issue with the ongoing placement of learners into Grade 10 under the new system, warning that many students may fail to report to their assigned schools due to long distances.

“Some students have been placed in schools very far from their homes. This is not practical, and many learners may not even report,” he noted.

Mule further cited the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results as evidence of a failing system, noting that only about 270,000 out of nearly 990,000 candidates qualified to join university.

“When only 270,000 students out of 990,000 qualify for university, that should be a wake-up call. It shows that something is fundamentally wrong, and immediate corrective measures must be taken,” he said.

Beyond education, the Matungulu MP also raised serious concerns about the independence and credibility of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mule claimed the electoral body has been compromised, alleging that President Ruto and his administration are at the centre of the interference.

“The IEBC is supposed to be an independent referee in the 2027 elections, but it has already been compromised, and there is evidence to that effect,” he alleged.

He singled out IEBC Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein Marjan, claiming he is linked to Smartmatic, the technology firm associated with election systems, and further alleged that Marjan is an adviser to President Ruto on electoral matters.

“No election will take place in 2027 with Marjan as a commissioner and Smartmatic as the technology provider. That technology is compromised, and Kenyans will not accept it,” Mule asserted.

The MP called for urgent reforms at the IEBC to restore public confidence and ensure free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
