Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau has maintained that he is not backing off in his quest to be the next Machakos Governor, piling pressure on the Wiper Democratic Movement to honour what he terms as a binding political agreement made ahead of the 2022 polls.

Speaking yesterday in Mulolongo during the issuance of bursary forms, Makau expressed confidence that his gubernatorial ambition is divinely ordained, insisting that his focus remains on good health, resilience, and faith as he prepares for the political battle ahead.

He urged his supporters not to lose hope, noting that prayers and unity could yet compel Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to stand by his earlier promise and hand him the party ticket in 2027.

“If God has said I will be governor, then I will be governor,” Makau said, adding that Wiper supporters should remain calm and steadfast. “We want a free and fair nomination, and we are ready to fight for it and ensure victory is on our side.”

Makau’s declaration reopens a political agreement dating back to the run-up to the 2022 General Election. At the time, he was locked in a fierce contest with the current Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti, for the Wiper gubernatorial ticket. According to Makau, the party leadership intervened and persuaded him to step aside in favour of Wavinya and instead seek re-election as Mavoko MP.

Makau agreed to the arrangement on condition that Governor Ndeti would serve only one term and that the Wiper Party would automatically hand him the gubernatorial ticket in 2027. He maintains that Kalonzo Musyoka publicly endorsed this agreement, making it both a political and moral obligation.

Now, with the 2027 race approaching, Makau says the time has come for the party leader to honour his word. He has openly called on Kalonzo to fulfil the pledge, arguing that failure to do so would amount to betrayal of trust and sacrifice.

Beyond the Machakos contest, Makau also weighed in on national politics, stating that Wiper remains committed to a united opposition ahead of 2027. He asserted that Kalonzo Musyoka is the only opposition leader capable of defeating President William Ruto, warning that any attempt to front an alternative candidate would result in a humiliating defeat.

“The opposition must be united, and they must understand that only Kalonzo can beat Ruto,” Makau said. “If they deceive themselves and choose someone else, they will be crushed.”

He further revealed that Wiper is preparing for a robust nationwide presence in the next election, with plans to field candidates in major urban centres including Nairobi and Mombasa. Makau boldly claimed that Wiper intends to clinch the Nairobi governorship, signalling the party’s ambition to expand its influence beyond its traditional strongholds.

As political temperatures rise in Machakos, Makau’s demands are likely to test Wiper’s internal cohesion and leadership credibility, setting the stage for a high-stakes nomination process that could shape the county’s political future in 2027.
