Six people lost their lives on Friday night following a fatal road traffic accident involving a bus and a matatu along Mombasa Road at Katumani, Machakos County.
According to a media brief issued by the Machakos County Emergency Response Team, the crash occurred earlier in the night, prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi. The teams carried out swift rescue and evacuation operations at the scene.
Six passengers were confirmed dead on the spot, while seven others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are currently receiving specialised medical care.
Rescue operations have since been concluded, with relevant authorities taking over traffic management in the area as investigations into the cause of the accident get underway.
Machakos County authorities extended their condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a quick recovery, assuring the public that further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
The incident once again highlights ongoing concerns over road safety along the busy Mombasa Road corridor, which remains a key transport route linking Nairobi to the coastal region.
