Grief and fear have gripped Mukuyuni village, Makueni County for a fourth consecutive day after well-known businessman Mathew Kituu was bludgeoned to death inside his own house by men wearing what appeared to be police uniforms.
According to his wife, Lucy Mathew, two uniformed attackers burst into their home moments after Kituu arrived on Monday night.
“One of them swung a metal bar at my head,” she recounted, her arm now bandaged and broken. “I blocked the blow, but the second strike snapped my arm. They dragged me into the bedroom—there was Mathew on the floor. I shook him, called his name… he never answered.”
Outside, anguished relatives and neighbours continue to stream through the compound, condemning what they call a deepening security crisis.
“We used to protect this village together,” sobbed Kawinzi Kituu, the victim’s elderly mother. “Now I’m alone.”
Mukuyuni Business Community chairperson Jonah Kitetu said the killing is part of a chilling pattern.
“Three months ago another resident was attacked by people in police-style uniforms. Are these real officers or criminals hiding among us? We need answers—fast.”
The body of the 34-year-old entrepreneur, who ran a popular agro-supply shop on the Wote-Makindu road, is lying at Wote Referral Hospital mortuary.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Wote have launched a murder probe but have yet to announce any arrests.
Local leaders are now facing mounting pressure to explain how armed impostors—or rogue officers—can strike with impunity in the heart of rural Makueni.
Residents are demanding round-the-clock patrols, functional street lighting and an immediate audit of all police uniforms issued in the county.
