The Council of Governors (CoG) has successfully mediated a truce between the Kiambu County Government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), effectively ending the ongoing doctors’ strike that had paralyzed health services in the county.
During a high-level consultative meeting convened today, both parties reached a consensus on all outstanding issues that had triggered the industrial action. Among the key resolutions was the immediate payment of one month’s withheld salaries to the doctors upon their resumption of duty.
Additionally, the county government agreed to reinstate union dues and assured that no doctor would face disciplinary action or victimization for participating in the strike.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council of Governors lauded both sides for embracing dialogue and urged healthcare professionals in Kiambu to resume work promptly in the interest of saving lives.
“The Council reaffirms that dialogue remains the best path to resolving labour disputes in the health sector,” the statement read in part.
The CoG reiterated its commitment to ensuring that medical personnel across the country are treated fairly while safeguarding uninterrupted service delivery to Kenyans.
The strike, which had entered its third week, had disrupted operations in major health facilities across Kiambu County, leaving patients stranded and services scaled down. The latest agreement now paves the way for normalcy to return to public hospitals.
