A somber mood has engulfed Kibwezi following the tragic drowning of two children at the infamous Kwa Muindi man-made dam.
The victims, a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy who were immediate neighbors, met their untimely deaths on Saturday while fetching water from the dam, locally known as Silanga.
According to eyewitness accounts, the boy slipped and began drowning. In a brave but heartbreaking attempt to save him, the young girl jumped in after him. Sadly, both children drowned before help could arrive.
Their bodies were later retrieved and taken to the Kibwezi Funeral Home in Kiunduani.
This is not the first time the dam has claimed young lives. Just last year, another child drowned in the same spot, raising serious concerns about safety measures around the water source.
The two latest victims were pupils at Muatini Comprehensive School in Kibwezi Town.
The tragedy has sparked fresh calls for local authorities to secure the area and provide safer water access for the community.
