Transport along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway came to a standstill this morning after angry residents and traders from Kiboko Market blocked the road at Kiboko to protest the killing of a middle-aged man by a local businessman.

According to eyewitnesses, the businessman—who also works as a teacher at a nearby school—allegedly teamed up with another individual to lynch the victim on suspicion of theft from his shop in the market.

Demanding immediate arrest of the suspects, the enraged locals barricaded the highway with stones and burning tires, causing a major traffic snarl-up that lasted for about 30 minutes.

The situation escalated quickly, forcing police to intervene and disperse the demonstrators using teargas canisters to restore order and reopen the highway.
