In a groundbreaking medical milestone, Makueni County Referral Hospital has successfully performed its first-ever brain tumor surgery—ushering in a new era of advanced healthcare for the region.
The intricate operation, which lasted over six hours, involved the removal of a brain tumor from a 69-year-old man who had been suffering from persistent migraines and seizures. The delicate procedure was spearheaded by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Muthoka Mativo, with vital support from Dr. Angela Murunga.
Chief Officer for Health, Dr. Harvey Mulei, who was present during the surgery, praised the medical team for their outstanding skill, coordination, and dedication. "This is a monumental step forward for Makueni’s health sector. Our team has proven that world-class care can be delivered right here at home," he stated.
Following an extensive diagnostic assessment, doctors determined that the patient required urgent surgical intervention. The successful operation was conducted in the hospital’s main theatre, marking a historic first for the county.
This achievement now positions Makueni Referral Hospital as a hub for specialized neurosurgical services—offering hope and convenience to residents who previously had to travel long distances to facilities like Kenyatta National Hospital for such procedures.
