The Makueni County Government has allocated funds to renovate the old Makueni Law Courts building in Wote Town and transform it into a Level Three health facility in a move aimed at improving access to healthcare services and easing pressure on the Makueni County Referral Hospital.
The building, which originally served as the first hospital in Wote before being converted into law courts, will be repurposed to strengthen primary healthcare services within the town.
The project comes amid challenges faced by patients accessing treatment under the Social Health Authority (SHA) framework, which requires patients to obtain referrals from lower-level health facilities before seeking services at referral hospitals. County officials say the new facility will help bridge this gap while reducing congestion at the county referral hospital.
Speaking on Tuesday during the handover of the renovation project to a contractor, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. emphasized the need for the contractor to work closely with the local community to create economic opportunities for residents throughout the construction period.
The governor also directed the Wote Water Company to ensure a reliable water supply to support the facility's planned 24-hour operations once completed.
In addition, he instructed the Department of Health Services to gradually expand the facility's capacity to offer a wider range of services, including maternity and gynaecological care.
Governor Mutula further revealed that the facility will soon be gazetted and fully equipped to provide quality healthcare services to residents of Wote and surrounding areas.
The project handover ceremony was attended by Wote MCA Felix Mateso, County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Joyce Mutua, and Chief Officer for Health Administration and Human Resource Harvey Mulei.
