Five people have been killed and 13 others seriously injured following a head-on collision involving a Kinatwa shuttle and a trailer at Kapiti Plains along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway on Wednesday evening.

The Kinatwa shuttle, which was travelling to Nairobi from Wote, was carrying 18 passengers, including the driver, when it collided with the trailer, which was heading in the opposite direction.

The five fatalities—four men and one woman—died on the spot, according to preliminary details from the scene.

Thirteen other occupants sustained severe injuries and were evacuated in two phases for specialized medical attention at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

Seven of the injured were initially evacuated by a Chumvi-based Machakos ambulance and rushed to the facility, while the remaining six were later transported by a Machakos Level 5 Hospital ambulance.

The injured are currently receiving treatment as investigations into the cause of the crash get underway.

The accident caused a major disruption along the busy highway, with emergency responders mobilizing to rescue the victims and clear the wreckage.
