Police in Mbooni East, Makueni County, have launched an investigation into a disturbing incident in which a local resident is accused of contaminating a communal water source in Uini Village, Ngoni Sub-location, Kisau Location.
According to area Chief Daniel Mutinda, the suspect—who is well known in the village—was reportedly seen on Wednesday by a neighbor spraying an unknown substance into the water point. The substance appeared similar to agricultural herbicides typically used on crops.
Mutinda explained that the eyewitness immediately reported the matter to the village elder, who then escalated the issue to his office. The Chief contacted the police, who have since visited the scene and collected water samples for analysis.
The eyewitness has also recorded a statement with the authorities and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Chief Mutinda noted that the water, which is mainly used for livestock and domestic chores such as washing and bathing, had already developed a strange odor by Thursday.
This alarming incident has revived memories of a similar case reported in 2014 at the Londokwe River in Makueni County, where residents awoke to discover that several water points along the riverbed had been poisoned.
