Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has cautioned political leaders against spreading misinformation about government programmes and development projects, saying misleading claims risk confusing the public and undermining progress.
Speaking during the burial of Mzee Tom Nzoka at Nzembete Village in Masongaleni Ward, Kibwezi East, the governor also pledged to support residents opposing proposed land payments affecting beneficiaries of settlement schemes in the area.
Governor Mutula criticised claims by some Members of Parliament who referred to bicycles issued to Community Health Promoters (CHPs) as “bicycle ambulances,” saying the description was inaccurate and could create a false impression about the programme.
He said leaders have a responsibility to provide factual information to the public and avoid statements that may misrepresent development initiatives.
On land issues, the governor opposed plans requiring beneficiaries in 20 settlement schemes to make payments to settlement trustees despite some residents already having title deeds. He vowed to defend the affected residents’ land ownership rights and urged them to remain united in opposing what he described as unfair charges.
Governor Mutula alleged that the proposed payments were politically motivated and assured residents that his administration would stand with them in protecting their interests.
The governor spoke during the burial of Mzee Tom Nzoka, who was remembered as a respected community elder, arbitrator, and political mentor who played a significant role in guiding the community.
The funeral was attended by Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, County Assembly Clerk Kevin Mutuku, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), County Executive Committee Members, and other local leaders.
