Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has come out strongly against the proposed scrapping of hardship allowances for teachers in Masinga, Mwala, and Kalama Sub-counties, warning that the move would worsen the already tough living conditions for educators in the region.
Addressing teachers during the Teachers’ Welfare Association Annual General Meeting held at Machakos Township Primary School on Saturday, Governor Wavinya criticized local Members of Parliament for their silence on the issue and urged them to defend the rights of their constituents.
“It’s deeply concerning when our own MPs remain quiet on such an important matter. They must rise to the occasion and reject these changes that will negatively affect our teachers,” she said.
The Governor encouraged teachers to go beyond welfare support and start investing collectively through their Saccos to shield themselves from the harsh economic climate.
“Let’s not limit ourselves to welfare support during hard times like bereavement. It’s time teachers invested in their future,” she advised.
As a show of support, Wavinya pledged to allocate a piece of land at the New Machakos City grounds for teachers to develop a project of their choice, saying she recognized the financial constraints many of them face due to multiple salary deductions.
“I truly admire how Machakos teachers have united to look after one another. I urge you to channel that same unity into investment. I’m ready to give you land at New Machakos City for your project,” she said.
The event’s host, KEPSHA Chairman and Machakos Township Primary Headteacher Eric Mutunga, praised the Governor’s commitment to educators’ welfare.
“As teachers, we know how to grade performance — and Governor Wavinya has scored beyond expectations,” Mutunga remarked.
