Chaos erupted outside the Machakos County Assembly on Tuesday morning as police were forced to lob teargas canisters at demonstrators protesting the suspension of nine Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
The protestors, who had gathered at the Assembly's main gate, demanded that the suspended legislators be allowed to access the chambers and participate in ongoing proceedings.
The standoff began as early as 8:00 a.m., when the suspended MCAs were barred from entering the chambers.
This followed a controversial announcement by Speaker Ann Kyusia on Monday, which reportedly sparked a heated altercation within the Assembly and prompted the Speaker to flee for her safety.
Katangi Ward MCA Felix Ngui sustained leg injuries after being forcefully ejected from the Assembly by the Sergeant-at-Arms, assisted by a heavy police presence.
Security remains tight at the Assembly, with officers stationed at all entrances to prevent the nine suspended MCAs from accessing the premises.
The morning session proceeded under heightened tension, with media barred from entering the chambers—raising further concerns about transparency and due process.
During the afternoon session, Speaker Kyusia invoked Standing Orders and abruptly adjourned the sitting, deepening the political standoff.
The suspended MCAs are; Stephen Mwanthi (Ekalakala), Judas Ndawa (Matuu), Felix Ngui (Katangi), Raphael Lucky, Charles Mbuva, Phoebe Koki, Anna Ndilo, Catherine Kyee
Local leaders and civil society groups are now calling for dialogue and a resolution to the impasse to restore normalcy to the Assembly's operations.
