Pressure is mounting on the government to disclose full details of a proposed contract for the upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), following reports that a Chinese firm is leading the multi-billion-shilling project.
Civil society organizations, lawyers, and political leaders have accused the State of lacking transparency in a process involving one of Kenya’s most strategic national assets. The groups are demanding the immediate release of all agreements and procurement documents related to the project, warning that they are prepared to challenge the deal in court if their concerns are not addressed.
Reports indicate that the contract could be worth between KSh150 billion and KSh180 billion, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. Fresh questions have also emerged over allegations that a company linked to Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo may have interests in the project.
Critics argue that the public deserves clarity on how the contractor was selected, the terms of the agreement, and the long-term implications for the country's aviation sector. The controversy has intensified calls for accountability and parliamentary scrutiny as stakeholders seek assurances that the deal serves Kenya's national interests.
The government is yet to provide a comprehensive response to the growing concerns surrounding the project.
