The Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) has dismissed reports of an exclusive political deal between its leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, insisting that discussions on the formation of a united opposition coalition remain open and inclusive.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Wiper said media reports suggesting that a political agreement had been reached between the two leaders were misleading.

“The Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) has noted media reports, including those carried by The Star, suggesting that a political deal has been reached between Kalonzo Musyoka and  Rigathi Gachagua,” the party said.

“We wish to set the record straight: no such exclusive deal exists.”

The clarification follows a meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence attended by Wiper elected leaders, including senators, Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly.

Gachagua, in a statement after the meeting, described the engagement as a discussion on the future of the country and the formation of the next administration.

He said he was pleased to host leaders from the Wiper Patriotic Front and engage them on the country’s political direction.

“After family pleasantries, I had a very fulfilling discussion with elected senators, MPs, MCAs and other leaders from Wiper Patriotic Front on the future of our country and more specifically the formation of the 6th Administration,” Gachagua said.

The DCP leader added that the leaders were in agreement on the need for political unity and consolidating their support behind a common cause.

“We are all in agreement that our family will be more strengthened when we put our vote to getting one basket,” he said.

However, Wiper moved swiftly to clarify that the meeting should not be interpreted as an exclusive political pact between Gachagua and Kalonzo.

According to the party, the meeting was convened by Gachagua to thank Wiper legislators and senators for the solidarity they had shown him during his impeachment.

“The meeting held at the Wamunyoro Residence was convened by Rigathi Gachagua to thank WPF Members of Parliament and Senators for the solidarity they showed him during his impeachment,” the statement said.

Wiper further maintained that it remains committed to building a broad and principled coalition with other parties under the United Alternative Government in Waiting.

“WPF remains committed to building a strong, principled coalition with its sister parties in the United Alternative Government in Waiting,” the party said.

The party added that consultations on the proposed political formation would continue through what it described as an open, transparent and inclusive process guided by shared democratic values and the interests of Kenyans.

The latest statement is likely to calm speculation over the political relationship between Kalonzo and Gachagua as opposition leaders intensify consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

While the Wamunyoro meeting has fuelled talk of closer cooperation between leaders from the Mt Kenya and Ukambani regions, Wiper has now made it clear that any future political arrangement will involve wider consultations among parties allied to the proposed opposition coalition.
