Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has expressed her condolences to the families of three university students who were brutally lynched by a mob in Machakos Town following what authorities have described as a false alarm.
The three students, who were also cousins, lost their lives after an irate crowd attacked them when a man allegedly raised a false accusation while attempting to evade responsibility for causing a road accident.
Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Machakos Central Ward on Wednesday, Governor Wavinya condemned the killings and urged residents to abandon mob justice, warning that the practice continues to claim innocent lives.
The Governor, who toured several ongoing projects including Kusyomuomo Hospital, St. Mary's Primary School cabro paving works, T.Tot drainage and parking facilities, and Machakos Main Market, said she was deeply saddened by the tragic deaths.
“I am saddened by the loss of three young men who were lynched here in Machakos. I ask the public to desist from killing suspects but hand them over to the police for processing,” she said while addressing traders and residents at Machakos Main Market.
Governor Wavinya emphasized that justice can only be achieved through lawful processes and appealed to members of the public to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute suspects rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Following her development tour, the Governor visited the bereaved family to offer her condolences and solidarity during the difficult period. She also pledged county government support towards the burial arrangements of the deceased students.
The killings sparked tension in Machakos Town, with students from Machakos University threatening to stage demonstrations to protest the deaths. The situation was later contained after police assured the students that several suspects linked to the killings had been arrested and investigations were ongoing.
The tragic incident has reignited concerns over the growing cases of mob justice in the country, with leaders and human rights advocates calling for greater public awareness and respect for the rule of law.
Authorities have urged witnesses and members of the public with information related to the incident to cooperate with investigators as efforts to bring those responsible to justice continue.
