Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based in Makindu have launched investigations to identify a student of Nguumo Boys High School who was allegedly captured on CCTV footage entering one of the dormitories that was later engulfed by fire on Monday night.

The incident occurred at the school located in Mbui Nzau area, Kibwezi West Constituency, in Makueni County, where unrest reportedly broke out among students, leading to destruction of property of unknown value.

According to preliminary reports, two dormitories are believed to have been set ablaze during the chaos, prompting a swift response from police officers who were deployed to contain the situation and restore order at the institution.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the fire, the extent of the destruction, and the individuals behind the incident. Sources familiar with the probe indicated that investigators are analysing CCTV footage obtained from the school as part of efforts to identify suspects linked to the inferno.

Following the unrest, students were sent home indefinitely on Tuesday morning as security officers continued with investigations at the school compound.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over increasing cases of unrest in learning institutions within the region. It comes barely a week after another fire-related incident was reported at Kaumoni Boys High School, also in Makueni County.

Education and security officials are yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the latest incident as investigations continue.
