Kenyan Sports Media Mourns Veteran Commentator Diblo Kaberia

The Kenyan sports media fraternity is mourning the death of celebrated sports journalist and veteran Radio Jambo commentator Diblo Kaberia, whose passing was confirmed on Sunday, May 24, following a prolonged illness.

News of his death was announced by his longtime colleague and close friend, Fred Arocho, who described the loss as heartbreaking to everyone who had the privilege of working with and knowing Kaberia.

Kaberia had reportedly been battling illness for several months, prompting fellow journalists, friends, and members of the sports fraternity to organize fundraising initiatives to support his medical treatment as concern over his health intensified.

In an emotional tribute, Arocho remembered Kaberia as more than just a colleague, describing him as a brother, confidant, and one of the finest voices in sports broadcasting.

Following the announcement, tributes poured in from sports journalists, football fans, and leaders within Kenyan football, all celebrating Kaberia’s immense contribution to sports media. Among those who paid tribute was Hussein Mohammed, who praised the late commentator’s passion, professionalism, and dedication to the growth of sports journalism in Kenya.

Kaberia was widely renowned for his energetic football commentary on Radio Jambo, where his lively personality, humor, and deep understanding of the game endeared him to listeners across the country. Together with Arocho, the pair formed one of East Africa’s most recognizable and beloved football commentary partnerships.

The duo covered major football competitions including the Kenyan Premier League, the Premier League, and the UEFA Champions League, earning admiration from football fans throughout the region.

Before transitioning into broadcasting, Kaberia had an active background in football. He played the game in his younger years, coached high school football teams for nearly a decade, and also served as a qualified football referee.

Kaberia joined Radio Africa Group in 2008 and remained one of the most recognizable voices in Kenyan sports broadcasting for close to two decades.

His death marks a major loss to Kenya’s sports media industry, with many remembering him as a passionate storyteller whose voice brought football to life for millions of listeners
