A wave of condemnation has swept across the nation following a violent attack on Ms. Jacinta Mary Mwoni, a respected activist, who was physically assaulted by hired goons during a funeral ceremony in Kitui County.

The shocking incident, which occurred in the presence of Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice from political leaders and civil society.

Leading the condemnation was Makueni County Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Wiper Women Democrats League, Hon. Rose Museo, who denounced the attack as “despicable and cowardly.”

“Such behavior is not only a gross violation of her rights and dignity as a woman and a citizen, but it is also a direct attack on the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and the rule of law,” Hon. Museo said.

Witnesses at the scene described chaotic scenes as Ms. Mwoni, known for her outspoken stance on social justice and good governance, was manhandled by individuals believed to have been incited due to her political views.

The assault happened in broad daylight, during a public gathering meant to mourn and unite the community—a setting that underscored the brutality and brazenness of the act.

Hon. Museo demanded an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident, urging authorities to bring all perpetrators, including those who may have sanctioned the violence, to justice.

“No individual—regardless of their political affiliation or office—has the right to use or sanction violence against anyone,” she said. “Violence has no place in our politics or in our society.”

The statement also emphasized solidarity with Ms. Mwoni and others who have suffered abuse and intimidation for expressing their opinions.

“We stand in full solidarity with Jacinta Mary and with all individuals who have suffered abuse and intimidation for speaking their minds,” Hon. Museo concluded.

The incident has reignited the national debate on political intolerance and the safety of women leaders and activists in Kenya. Civil society groups, human rights organizations, and fellow legislators have echoed the call for accountability, describing the assault as an affront to Kenya’s democratic values.

As investigations commence, all eyes are on law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served, and that those behind the attack face the full force of the law.

The public, meanwhile, continues to demand an end to politically motivated violence and greater protection for voices of dissent.
