Aspiring Kitui Woman Representative Dr. Rodah Kithuku has called on the government to urgently step up security operations in Mwingi North Constituency following a deadly attack in Kamari Village, Tseikuru Ward, that left seven people dead and property destroyed.
Speaking when she visited the affected families, Kithuku condemned the incident, which she attributed to armed camel herders, and urged swift intervention to prevent further bloodshed. She expressed condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the entire Kamari community, describing the attack as both tragic and unacceptable.
Kithuku emphasized the need for a comprehensive security operation in the Kamari forest, calling for the immediate disarmament of armed individuals believed to be behind the violence. She noted that the continued presence of illegal firearms in the area poses a serious threat to lives and livelihoods.
“The government must act decisively to restore order. Those carrying illegal weapons must be disarmed to ensure our people can live and work without fear,” she said.
She further appealed for the upgrading of Kamari Police Station, urging authorities to deploy more officers and equip the facility adequately to respond to security threats. According to Kithuku, the current police presence is insufficient to safeguard the vast and volatile area.
In addition, she proposed the establishment of a border patrol unit to monitor movements across the region, arguing that enhanced surveillance would help curb the influx of armed individuals and prevent future attacks.
Kithuku also called on the government to compensate families and traders who suffered losses during the attack. Several homes and businesses were torched, leaving victims without sources of income.
“These were hardworking families who depended on their businesses to educate their children and sustain their livelihoods. They deserve compensation to help them rebuild their lives,” she said.
To further bolster local security, Kithuku urged the government to increase the number of National Police Reservists in the area and ensure they are equipped with functional weapons to support regular security forces.
During her visit, she provided financial assistance to the seven bereaved families as a gesture of support and comfort during their time of grief.
The Kamari incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Kitui County, with leaders and residents now piling pressure on authorities to take firm and immediate action.
