A sombre mood has engulfed Ulu Village in Kiima Kiu/Kalanzoni Ward following the tragic drowning of a Grade Five pupil at Musikitini Dam on Saturday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Muuo Kyalo, is reported to have drowned at around 4:00 p.m. while swimming in the dam alongside fellow pupils.

According to a statement from the County Disaster Management Unit, the incident was first reported by the area Member of County Assembly, prompting an emergency response.

“With the assistance of local community members, the body was successfully retrieved from the dam,” said James Kimweli, a Disaster and Fire Management Officer.

The body has since been handed over to police officers for further investigation and necessary procedures.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of children around open water sources, especially during school holidays and weekends when supervision is limited.

Local leaders and authorities are now urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and caution children against swimming in unsafe areas to prevent similar tragedies.
