Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has assured residents and road users that the ongoing construction of the Emali–Ukia road will be completed within the stipulated timeline despite setbacks caused by heavy rains.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project, Mutuse said significant progress had already been made on the initial phase of the road. He noted that the first six kilometres from Emali have been successfully tarmacked to the required six-inch standard, marking a key milestone in the project’s implementation.

The legislator further revealed that earthworks had commenced, extending approximately two kilometres towards Nduu ndune. However, he acknowledged that persistent rains had temporarily halted further progress, with contractors unable to proceed due to muddy conditions.

Mutuse disclosed that the contractor has been put on notice to expedite the works once weather conditions improve, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring timely delivery of the project.

“We expect the contractor to resume work immediately the rains subside to recover lost time and ensure the road is completed within the contract period,” he said.

The road project, which is expected to be completed within two years, is a critical infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity in the region. Mutuse expressed optimism that the works could be finalized even earlier than scheduled, paving the way for further extension of the road beyond Matiliku towards Ukia.

He also underscored the importance of maintaining high construction standards, noting that qualified engineers have been deployed to supervise the project and ensure compliance with Class A road specifications.

At the same time, Mutuse reassured the public that the government has allocated sufficient funds to support the project. He confirmed that Sh1.2 billion has been set aside progressively to guarantee the road’s completion within or before the contractual timeline.

The Emali–Ukia road is expected to enhance transport efficiency, boost local economic activities, and improve accessibility for residents once completed.
