Four police officers have been charged before the Kajiado Law Courts over their alleged involvement in a violent robbery targeting a Congolese national in Kitengela.
The officers—Police Constables Lincoln Ashioya, Tom Odero Abwoga of Muungano Police Station, Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a of Elwak Police Station, and Perminus Muiruri Kamau attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kitengela—are accused of jointly committing the offence alongside an accomplice identified only as Erick, who remains at large.
They were each granted cash bail of KSh 50,000 after the court declined a prosecution request to detain them for 10 days to complete investigations. The officers have been ordered to report daily at 7:00 p.m. to DCI offices in Isinya.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on March 23, 2026, at around 9:42 p.m., when the complainant, Djuma Yasin Mumbele, was travelling from the Namanga border to Nairobi. He was allegedly approached by Erick, who promised to connect him with a potential buyer for his diamond necklace in Kitengela.
Upon arrival at the Kitengela main stage, the complainant was directed to a Suzuki vehicle where individuals posing as buyers were waiting. After handing over the necklace for inspection, two men reportedly forced their way into the vehicle and attempted to handcuff him.
Members of the public intervened, rescuing the complainant and apprehending one suspect, who was escorted to a nearby police station alongside the victim.
The suspects are accused of stealing a diamond necklace valued at USD 1,905, as well as USD 3,000, EUR 300, and KSh 500.
The complainant sustained neck and back injuries during the incident and was treated at Kitengela Level Four Hospital before being discharged in stable condition.
Authorities recovered the vehicle used in the robbery, which is now being held as an exhibit.
Further investigations have linked the officers to another robbery case under probe by DCI Embakasi. An identification parade conducted prior to their arraignment reportedly yielded positive results.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations clarified that one of the accused officers, PC Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a, was off duty at the time of the incident and is not attached to the Deputy President’s security detail, dismissing claims circulating in sections of the media.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing accountability within the National Police Service, stating that any officer found culpable will face the full force of the law.
