Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has called for increased investment in youth empowerment and talent development in Machakos County, saying the future of the region lies in harnessing the immense potential of its young people.
Speaking during the Mitaboni Youth Tournament held at Mitaboni Stadium and organized by Mitaboni MCA Philip Kitoo, the Mavoko legislator underscored the urgent need to create structured opportunities for youth to thrive in sports, education, and vocational training.
Makau noted that Machakos youth are talented, energetic, and ambitious but often lack the facilities and institutional support required to fully unlock their abilities.
“Our young people are gifted and full of potential. What they need are proper facilities, mentorship, and structured support systems that can nurture their talents and transform them into sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The MP emphasized that sports development should not merely be treated as recreation but as a viable economic pathway capable of uplifting communities. He pointed out that well-organized grassroots tournaments such as the Mitaboni Youth Tournament help identify talent early and instill discipline, teamwork, and resilience among participants.
Beyond sports, Makau reiterated the importance of strengthening technical and vocational training across the county. He called for enhanced capacity in existing local polytechnics and the construction of new institutions where necessary to meet growing demand.
“Skills training is the foundation of economic independence,” he stated. “When we equip our youth with practical and market-driven skills, we empower them to become job creators rather than job seekers.”
He maintained that youth empowerment, sports development, and skills training form the cornerstone of his broader vision to transform Machakos County into a hub of opportunity and innovation.
The event brought together several leaders, including Machakos County Minority Leader Francis Kavyu, Peter Kilonzo (Mbiuni Ward), Boniface Katiti (Muthetheni Ward), Dominic Maitha (Muthwani Ward), and former Kathiani Central MCA Geoffrey Mutuku, popularly known as Kitomeo.
The tournament drew large crowds of residents and youth participants, reflecting growing enthusiasm for community-driven initiatives aimed at uplifting young people across the county.
