Kitui Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua has dismissed calls to use a scientific method in selecting the Opposition’s presidential flag bearer, warning that such proposals risk sowing confusion and delaying crucial political decisions ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking during a Sunday church service in Kitui County, Wambua took issue with remarks attributed to Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i, who has reportedly suggested the adoption of a research-based approach to determine the Opposition’s presidential candidate.

The outspoken senator argued that instead of introducing what he termed as complicated selection methods, Opposition leaders should prioritize dialogue and consensus-building. He cautioned that introducing new frameworks at this stage could derail unity within the Opposition.

Wambua further warned against what he described as attempts to politically “manage” the Kamba community, insisting that such strategies would not be tolerated. He declared that the community had moved past what he described as political manipulation following the 2022 General Election.

Although he clarified that he was not speaking on behalf of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Wambua strongly endorsed Kalonzo’s presidential bid, maintaining that the former Vice President remains the most qualified candidate within the Opposition ranks.

The senator urged Opposition leaders to announce their presidential candidate by June, arguing that Kenyans are demanding clarity on leadership and direction. He said early identification of a flag bearer would allow the Opposition to mobilize, popularize its agenda, and strategically position itself to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.

Wambua also compared the Opposition’s current state to that of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), noting that the governing party appears more organized and strategically aligned. He referenced recent political statements allegedly directed at members of the Orange Democratic Movement, which he said demonstrated confidence and cohesion within the ruling coalition.

The senator went further to claim that the push for scientific selection could be part of a broader scheme to destabilize the Opposition from within. He urged leaders to respect the will of the majority, asserting that grassroots support across various regions points to Kalonzo as the preferred candidate.

Wambua questioned the origin and motive behind the proposed scientific approach, urging Opposition leadership to focus on unity and decisiveness as preparations for the 2027 presidential contest begin to gather momentum.
