The Board of Directors of the Makueni County Fruit Development and Marketing Authority has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Kalamba Fruit Processing Plant, Mr. Joseph Kioko, to step aside with immediate effect to pave way for investigations into operational and procedural shortcomings at the facility.

The decision, announced by the Authority’s Chairman, Paul Nguku-Muthama, follows persistent complaints from mango farmers across Makueni County over significant post-harvest losses after the Kalamba plant reportedly failed to purchase produce during the just-ended harvesting season.

According to the Board, an internal review revealed notable performance and procedural gaps that require comprehensive assessment and corrective action to safeguard the Authority’s mandate and restore confidence among stakeholders.

“The Board has a responsibility to ensure the organization continues to meet its strategic, operational and fiduciary obligations,” Nguku-Muthama stated. “This step is necessary to allow independent investigations while preserving institutional integrity and service delivery.”

To ensure continuity of operations, the Board has appointed Ms. Agnes Kitili as the Acting Chief Executive Officer. The Board expressed confidence in the senior management team and staff, noting that their commitment remains crucial in sustaining the Authority’s mission of supporting fruit farmers and strengthening value addition in the county.

The Kalamba Fruit Processing Plant was established as a flagship project aimed at reducing post-harvest losses, stabilizing fruit prices and enhancing income for local farmers through value addition and market access. However, farmers have recently raised concerns over the plant’s inability to absorb their produce, leading to widespread losses and economic distress among mango growers who depend on seasonal harvests for their livelihoods.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and fairness in handling the matter, emphasizing that due process will be followed throughout the investigations.

Nguku-Muthama further appreciated the continued support from the Makueni County Government under the leadership of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., alongside development partners, donors and stakeholders who have supported the county’s fruit value chain development agenda.

Farmers and stakeholders are now keenly awaiting the outcome of the investigations, which are expected to inform reforms aimed at strengthening operations at the processing plant and preventing similar challenges in future harvesting seasons.
