Detectives have arrested three individuals, including a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer and a police officer, in connection with an alleged extortion scheme targeting bar owners and unsuspecting members of the public.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects had reportedly been moving from one entertainment establishment to another within the township, intimidating business owners and extorting money while posing as authority figures.
The trio, identified as Samuel Ogando Odoyo, a KDF officer; Onyango Nelson Kasera, a police officer; and Joseph Mulwa Mwambi, a civilian, is said to have been operating using a white Toyota Axio, which they allegedly used to cruise around the area while carrying out their activities.
Detectives launched a swift operation following reports from victims, leading to the arrest of the suspects. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle used in the operation bore a fake registration number, KDB 648W. Authorities later established that the car’s genuine registration number is KDD 574W.
A search conducted on the vehicle uncovered several suspicious items, including a black pistol holster, a pair of handcuffs, and other materials believed to have been used to facilitate the alleged crimes.
Following their arrest, the suspects were subjected to an identification parade, during which victims reportedly positively identified them as the individuals involved in the extortion incidents.
The three are currently in police custody as detectives finalize investigations and prepare to arraign them in court.
The DCI has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on criminal activities and urged members of the public to report individuals who misuse positions of authority to exploit citizens.
