The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday arrested two traffic police officers attached to the Diani Traffic Base over allegations of soliciting bribes from motorists along the busy Likoni–Lungalunga Road.
The officers were apprehended following an investigation launched by the Commission after receiving numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public over persistent extortion at the road stretch.
According to the EACC, the officers were caught in the act during an operation in which they were found demanding bribes from motorists without conducting any vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations.
Those arrested were identified as Police Constable Agnes Longoet and Police Constable Alphanus Anayo.
After their arrest, the suspects were escorted to the EACC Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa, where they recorded statements and are undergoing further processing ahead of possible prosecution.
The Commission said the operation is part of an intensified nationwide crackdown on bribery, particularly on major highways during the festive season when traffic volumes increase and motorists are more vulnerable to extortion.
EACC noted that it is scaling up intelligence gathering, surveillance, and enforcement actions targeting essential public services and sectors prone to corruption, warning public officers against abusing their positions for personal gain.
The Commission further urged members of the public to continue reporting corruption-related incidents, assuring them of confidentiality and protection as investigations proceed.
