Members of the Machakos County Assembly have declared they will resume committee sittings on Friday, May 23, 2025, defying a directive by Speaker Ann Kiusya to suspend them indefinitely.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, County Assembly Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka stated that the MCAs had resolved to reconvene after reviewing Standing Order 161, which assigns the power to call committee meetings to the Clerk of the County Assembly—not the Speaker.

“A notice for a select committee meeting should come from the Clerk, not the Speaker. Her decision to suspend the sittings indefinitely, citing security concerns, was outside the bounds of her authority,” said Nzioka, who also represents Machakos Central Ward.

He affirmed that all 59 MCAs would return to the Assembly chambers to continue with critical committee business that cannot be delayed.

“We will not be in contempt of court, as we will steer clear of any discussions regarding the Speaker’s impeachment or matters currently before the court,” he added. “I urge all committee chairpersons to promptly notify the Clerk’s office of their intent to hold meetings.”

Speaker Kiusya had suspended all Assembly proceedings last month following chaotic scenes that left two MCAs injured.

The violence erupted amid tensions over an impeachment motion against her—proceedings that have since been halted by the High Court.

In response to the ongoing impasse, the Senate has summoned Speaker Kiusya, the MCAs, and the Clerk to appear before it on Tuesday next week to address the crisis and seek a resolution.
