Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on the National Government to ensure that the devolution of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff to counties is supported with adequate funding to avoid overburdening devolved units.

Speaking during the Nurses Week celebrations in Machakos, the Governor expressed concern over the ongoing transition plan, saying counties may struggle to absorb UHC staff without the necessary financial support.

“If you want to devolve UHC staff, then you must also devolve the funds. You can’t tell us their contracts are ending in March next year and expect counties to absorb them amid current economic hardships,” Governor Wavinya said.

She took the opportunity to commend nurses for their dedication and service, especially during emergencies and in remote areas, acknowledging their vital role in the healthcare system.

“In times of crisis, it’s our nurses who rise to the occasion. We do not take you for granted. I truly appreciate the incredible work you do, particularly in underserved regions,” she said.

Governor Wavinya also highlighted key strides made in the health sector under her administration, including enhancements in health infrastructure and continued efforts to support and empower healthcare professionals.

She further applauded nurses for their roles beyond medical care, recognizing them as educators, counselors, leaders, and community role models.

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi supported the Governor’s position, expressing concern about delays in disbursement of county funds and increased deductions from civil servants’ salaries.

He stressed the need for proper financial preparedness at the county level before taking on additional responsibilities.

Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives Chairperson Joseph Nguasi appreciated Governor Wavinya’s support for the nursing profession.

“You have the best nursing team, and I’m glad you understand the situation on the ground. Thank you for always standing with nurses,” said Nguasi.

This year’s Nurses Week was celebrated under the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future — Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.”
