Campaigns for the Mumbuni North ward by-election in Machakos County have shifted into high gear as major political forces go head-to-head in the race to fill the vacant seat ahead of the November 27 vote.

The contest has emerged as a fierce battleground between the Wiper Party and Maendeleo ChapChap (MCC), led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua. Both camps held parallel rallies yesterday in a last-ditch effort to woo undecided voters.

Wiper’s candidate, Anthony Kisoi, received a strong show of support from several MPs allied to the Democratic Change Party (DCP), who accompanied him to Tumba market. Kathiani MP Robert Mbui led the charge, unleashing a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s government.

“President Ruto’s administration has failed the people of Kenya — from the collapsing education system to deteriorating healthcare and an economy on its knees,” Mbui declared. “We will ensure Kenya Kwanza’s candidate is sent packing in this mini poll.”

Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto reiterated the enduring political ties between Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, urging voters to rally behind Kisoi as a step toward Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions.

“Supporting Kisoi is a strategic investment in Kalonzo’s 2027 bid. Let’s vote wisely,” Wandeto urged.

Mukurweini MP John Kagucia further lambasted the government for what he termed as the “deliberate sabotage of the education sector” through delayed funding and failure to end the ongoing lecturers’ strike. Matungulu MP Stephen Mule accused the current administration of “abandoning the youth, especially Generation Z,” while Naivasha MP Jane Kihara appealed to residents to turn out in large numbers.

Just a few kilometers away, Labour CS Alfred Mutua was leading Maendeleo ChapChap’s campaign at AIC Mung’ala Church. Mutua lamented the lack of progress in the region, blaming opposition leaders for “selling poverty-driven politics” to the Akamba community.

“It is time for real leadership that delivers, not rhetoric. Harrison Wambua is the right man to lead Mumbuni North into a new era,” Mutua said as he endorsed the MCC candidate.

The Mumbuni North seat fell vacant following the death of MCA Gideon Kavuu in August 2023. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has slated the by-election for November 27.
