The Senior Deputy Director of Kenya Medical Services, Dr. Andrew Mulwa, has urged residents of Makûeni County to ignore rumors that the new Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme is failing and to sign up without delay.
Addressing a school fundraising event at Unoa Comprehensive, Dr. Mulwa revealed that Makûeni currently sits at 27th place nationally for SHA enrollment—an outcome he called “disappointing.”
He reminded locals that SHA is essentially a scaled-up version of “Makûeni Care,” the county-based health cover he spearheaded while serving as County Health Executive.
“Kuna ule mpango wa matibabu niliacha nimeanzisha hapa Makûeni ulikuwa unaitwa Makûeni Care. Huo mpango ndio tumeutengeneza ukakuwa wa kitaifa wa Universal Health Coverage ambao tunauita SHA na SHIF. Kwa hivyo nawaomba tujitokeze na kujiandikisha,” he told the crowd in Swahili.
Dr. Mulwa disclosed that 22 million Kenyans have already registered for SHA, stressing that no citizen should ever have to sell land or livestock to cover hospital bills.
