Two women believed to be key players in a drug distribution network have been arrested in Mombasa as detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) intensify their war against narcotics trafficking within the coastal city and its outskirts.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects were apprehended in separate operations conducted on Tuesday following a tip-off from members of the public.
In the first raid, detectives stormed a house in Bombolulu where 48-year-old Mary Achieng had allegedly turned her home into a secret drug stash point. A thorough search of the premises led officers to a shocking discovery — 58 large rolls of bhang weighing approximately eight kilograms, all ingeniously hidden in the ceiling of her toilet.
Elsewhere in Tudor’s Moroto area, detectives cornered 42-year-old Farhiya Hassan Moulid Ajorani, who was found in possession of several rolls of bhang ready for sale. A search of her house led to the recovery of eight large rolls, 36 small rolls, 30 medium rolls, and 10 additional small rolls hidden in her handbag.
Both women were taken into custody and are currently undergoing processing pending their arraignment in court.
Police say the latest arrests are part of a sustained effort to dismantle the narcotics trade networks operating within the coastal region, which has long struggled with drug abuse and trafficking challenges.
Authorities have urged the public to continue sharing information that could help security agencies curb the spread of illegal drugs, emphasizing that community cooperation remains crucial in the ongoing crackdown.
