Daniel Nyerere pulled off a surprise victory at the 2025 Rana Golf Day, carding an impressive 45 net to lift the winner’s trophy at the Nyanza Golf Club on Sunday.

The two-day tournament drew a record 250 golfers—the largest turnout at the club this year—making Nyerere’s triumph all the more remarkable.

“Some of my four-ball mates didn’t think I had much of a chance, and that really motivated me,” Nyerere said after receiving his trophy. “I told myself I had to prove them wrong. I stayed focused, hole by hole, and I’m proud of how it all turned out.”

Veteran golfer Omingo and Alice Gondi both tied at 42 net, but Omingo claimed second place while Gondi settled for third on countback.

In the category contests, Joseph Lunani topped Division A with 39 net, edging out Peter Mogendi (37). Division B produced a thrilling finish as Kisumu Water and Sanitation Managing Director Thomas Odongo narrowly beat Edwin Mburu on countback after both posted 42 net. Division C featured a tightly contested all-ladies battle, with Faith Nzomo clinching victory over Bneson Magolo on countback after they both recorded 43 net.

Special awards saw David Biegon claim the men’s longest drive, while Hellen Muma took the women’s equivalent. The nearest-to-pin honors went to J. Oketch and Sharon Moraa. In the ball pool contest, Oketch, Moraa, and Dr. Edwin Mburu each scooped 33 balls.

Nyanza Golf Club captain Julius Omolo hailed the tournament as a milestone event.

“This has been our biggest tournament this year, both in turnout and competitive spirit,” Omolo said. “We are very thankful to Rana Motors for their generous support. The enthusiasm from players shows how important these partnerships are for the growth of golf in the region.”

Rana Auto Selection Limited Chief Executive Sultan Rana praised the golfers for their commitment and highlighted the company’s future expansion plans.

“We are excited to sponsor this tournament as a way of giving back to society and our clients in the region and across the country,” Rana said. “We are also exploring opportunities in Kericho and Kakamega to meet the growing demand in those areas.”
