A sombre mood has engulfed the teaching fraternity and the larger Kibwezi community following the tragic death of Madam Jackline Musyoki, a Mathematics and Business Studies teacher at St. Mary’s Kinyambu Secondary School, in a grisly road accident at Kisayani along the Kibwezi–Kitui Road last night.

The accident, which occurred shortly after 8 p.m., claimed four lives — Madam Jackline, her young daughter, her mother-in-law, and another woman believed to be her sister-in-law.

According to reports, the family was travelling home from Kitui after attending Jackline’s dowry payment ceremony, ahead of her wedding scheduled for this coming Sunday.

Witnesses say the vehicle they were travelling in suffered a front rear tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The car rolled several times before plunging off the road at Kisayani.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the education sector, with colleagues and friends struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.

In a statement, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Assistant Executive Secretary for Kibwezi, Mr. Festus Muthoka, described the deaths as “profoundly shocking and deeply saddening.”

“On behalf of the teachers of Kibwezi, we extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Moki, the teachers, students, board, and parents of St. Mary’s Kinyambu,” said Muthoka, referring to Jackline’s husband, a teacher at Nguumo Girls Secondary School.

As the community mourns, messages of condolence continue to pour in, with many calling for heightened road safety measures along the Kibwezi–Kitui Road, which has witnessed a series of fatal accidents in recent months.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kibwezi Level 4 Hospital mortuary, as families and friends grapple with preparations for the burial — which was initially to be a wedding celebration.
