There was jubilation at Mambrui Secondary School in Magarini Sub County, Kilifi County, as the school community came together to celebrate a major academic milestone—one of their own, Charles Baya, has secured a prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in the United Kingdom.

Baya, who hails from Mjanaheri village, rose from a life of poverty to academic excellence. Sponsored by the school from Form One through university, he beat the odds to graduate with First Class Honours from Egerton University—a feat that earned him the fully funded international scholarship.

He was joined at the celebration by fellow alumni, current students, teachers, board members, and the school’s founder, a Dutch philanthropist, in an inspiring event that highlighted the transformative power of education. The colourful ceremony was also graced by Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi, who lauded Baya’s resilience and the school’s commitment to uplifting underprivileged learners.

“Baya’s story is living proof that education has no boundaries. With determination and the right support, any child—no matter their background—can achieve greatness,” said the MP, urging other students to stay focused and explore global opportunities.

Baya, who studied at Mambrui Secondary between 2014 and 2017, returned to the school after university to give back by volunteering as a teacher. “This school gave me a future. Sponsoring my education and mentoring me was life-changing. Now, I’m about to leave for the UK on September 26, and I’m here to inspire others to believe in themselves,” he said.

Several of his peers—beneficiaries of the same scholarship initiative—also attended the celebration. Many are now professionals in various fields and credited the school’s support as the reason they made it through university.

Principal Halima Omar expressed pride in Baya’s achievement, calling it a validation of the school’s long-standing commitment to supporting needy but bright students. “This is a proud moment for all of us. We’re witnessing the fruit of our efforts and reaffirming our belief that no child should be left behind due to poverty,” she said.

Board Chair Suleiman Salim echoed her sentiments, noting that Mambrui Secondary has supported over 100 students through bursaries and scholarships—many of whom have gone on to earn international accolades. “Charles’ success proves that background doesn’t define destiny. With hard work and the right support system, anything is possible.”

The celebration not only honoured Baya’s scholarship win but also served as a beacon of hope and motivation for the school community and beyond.
