Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has accused the government of targeting him for standing in solidarity with Kenyans protesting against state failures, after his official security detail was withdrawn in what he termed a retaliatory move.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, Owino claimed the revocation of his security was a direct consequence of his participation in Tuesday’s Gen Z-led demonstrations, which saw thousands of young Kenyans take to the streets in protest against corruption, rising taxes, and lack of accountability.
"Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future," said the outspoken legislator. “Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security.”
Owino, a vocal critic of government excesses, said the move was not just a personal attack but a blow to democratic principles and a worrying signal that dissent is no longer tolerated in Kenya's political space.
"Let me be clear: this is not just an attack on me, it is an attack on democracy itself. When elected representatives are punished for standing with the people, it is a sign of a government that fears accountability, not one that serves," he declared.
Despite the move, the MP vowed to remain resolute, stating that intimidation tactics would not deter him from advocating for justice and freedom.
“I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. My voice, and the voice of every citizen demanding justice, fairness, and freedom, will only grow louder. Kenyans are my security.”
He urged the public to stay vigilant and united, emphasizing that elected leaders must remain accountable to the people.
"Stay alert, stay united, and know that your leaders should answer to you—not threaten those who stand beside you. The truth cannot be suppressed. The movement for justice cannot be stopped," said Owino.
Owino becomes the latest in a series of leaders and activists reportedly facing state intimidation for aligning with the rapidly growing Gen Z protest movement that has shaken the country’s political landscape
