There was pomp and color at Makueni Boys’ High School on Friday as the institution held a grand celebration to honor the 2024 KCSE candidates who made history by registering the highest university transition rate since the school was founded in 1966.

Of the 419 candidates who sat the national exam, an impressive 396 scored C+ and above, achieving a university transition rate of 94.5%. The school also posted a remarkable mean score of 8.8, a new record in the school’s history.

The top student, Briton Wafula, scored an A plain of 81 points. He was among the 39 students who scored an A or A minus, while 93 students secured a B plus grade. The top performers were awarded various prizes, including laptops and smartphones, during the institution’s annual Education Day graced by high-profile education dignitaries and stakeholders.

Speaking during the event, Chief Principal Mr. Francis Mutua lauded the exceptional performance and noted that the school had deliberately invested in strategy and hard work.

“This year (2025), our target is even higher,” said Mr. Mutua. “We are aiming for 100 percent university transition and a mean score of 9.6. To achieve this, we held a retreat as teachers to analyze our strengths and weaknesses, projected subject-wise performance, and developed an actionable plan.”

The principal revealed that the school completed the 2025 syllabus by March 31st, allowing ample time for focused revision and engagement with examiners and past papers.

“Since the second week of May, our candidates have been undertaking intensive revision. Completing the syllabus early gives us the time to thoroughly prepare our students for exams,” he added.

Beyond academics, Mr. Mutua highlighted that the school was excelling in co-curricular activities such as ball games and music, and was fully prepared to implement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) at senior school level.

“Our school will be offering all three pathways—STEM, Social Sciences, and Sports & Arts. We want every student who joins Makueni Boys to find their desired combination without limitation,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to parents for their support, revealing that fee balances had dropped from Ksh 30 million to Ksh 26 million this year. He acknowledged their role in funding a new administration block and thanked the government for supporting the construction of a modern library block that will include classrooms, computer rooms, and a spacious library.

Masila Nzioka, the County Executive Member for Devolution in Makueni County who represented Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, commended the school for producing leaders of substance.

“This school has shaped many outstanding individuals. The first County Attorney of the Makueni Government is an alumnus of this institution,” said Nzioka. “Today, I witnessed incredible innovation from your students. From what I saw, the solution to some of our greatest challenges—such as solid and liquid waste management—may come from within this school.”

He added, “The class of 2024 has done us proud. Continue to shine wherever you go. And to the current class, I challenge you to surpass this success. The bar is high, but so is your potential.”

The day ended with cheers and a strong sense of pride and purpose as the institution not only celebrated past success but also set its eyes firmly on future excellence.
