The Government has stepped up efforts to expand electricity access in Makueni County, with new village electrification projects launched in Kaiti Constituency as part of a wider KSh2.7 billion programme targeting more than 23,000 new household connections.
Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Kamau Wachira officially launched the Kyaa Village Electrification Programme, where 200 residents are set to benefit from new electricity connections. The project is part of an ongoing KSh267 million electrification programme in Kaiti Constituency expected to connect more than 3,500 households.
Wachira said the Government was committed to ensuring that development reaches communities across the country, noting that residents in Kyaa had identified electricity, better roads, reliable water, quality education and economic opportunities among their key priorities.
“The people of Kyaa Village are amazing, warm and forward-looking, and their message was clear,” Wachira said, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to working with communities to translate their priorities into tangible development.
The PS was accompanied by PS for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, Former KMTC Chair Philip Kaloki among other leaders during the development tour.
Meanwhile, Mutuse said the Government was accelerating the implementation of electrification projects across Makueni County, with the wider programme expected to deliver 23,062 new household connections.
The Kibwezi West MP said the Government was working to reverse longstanding inequalities in access to electricity and ensure that power reaches more households, particularly in rural communities.
“For far too long, access to electricity has been the preserve of a privileged few. President William Ruto is reversing this trend to ensure that electricity becomes accessible to every Kenyan,” Mutuse said.
The electrification projects are expected to improve livelihoods by enabling residents to establish and expand small businesses, support learning, improve access to information and communication technologies, and enhance household productivity.
Other leaders who accompanied PS Wachira included Professor Philip Kaloki who is eyeing Makueni Governorship, Dr Stephen Ndolo, Katemi Makenga and Job Tuta who all have declared to run for Kaiti MP, Wavinya Nzioka who is running for Makueni Woman Rep, and Kisoi Munyao who is running for Mbooni MP seat.
The leaders urged residents to continue working with the Government and local leadership to identify priority development needs, promising that ongoing investments in electricity and other infrastructure would help accelerate socio-economic transformation across Makueni County.
