The Somali community in Kilifi County has called for swift investigations and enhanced security following the brutal killing of a 28-year-old trader in Gede village, Ganze Sub-County.
The victim, Abdikarim Isaac Yunus, was reportedly attacked at his shop on Friday evening, where unknown assailants slit his throat before fleeing the scene. Community members said the attackers did not steal any property, raising concerns that the killing may have been targeted.
Speaking during Yunus's burial at the Kilifi Muslim Cemetery on Saturday, local businessman Harun Musa condemned the killing and urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
Musa said the incident was not isolated, claiming that at least three members of the Somali community had been killed under similar circumstances in recent months.
"We are deeply shocked that a young businessman who was peacefully running his shop in Ganze could be murdered in such a cruel manner. We appeal to security agencies to conduct thorough investigations, arrest those responsible, and ensure justice is served," he said.
He noted that the attackers appeared to have had no intention of robbing the victim since they left without taking any valuables.
"The fact that nothing was stolen suggests the motive was not theft. We want our leaders and security agencies to establish what is behind these killings and put an end to them," Musa added.
Another community member, Hare Dagau, expressed concern that the incidents could fuel insecurity as the country approaches the next General Election.
He called on both the national and county governments to urgently address the situation before it deteriorates further.
"As we move closer to the election period, we are worried that these incidents could escalate. The government must investigate these killings and resolve any underlying issues that may be contributing to them to safeguard lives and maintain peace," Dagau said.
The community has urged security agencies to intensify investigations into the latest killing while reassuring residents of their safety, amid growing fears over what they describe as a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks against Somali traders in the area.
