Advocates in Machakos on Friday joined colleagues across the country in demonstrations and a solemn tribute to two lawyers who died under mysterious circumstances, calling for swift and transparent investigations into the killings.
Led by the Chairperson of the Machakos Branch of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Gladys Gichuki, the lawyers said they had gathered in grief, solidarity, and a shared commitment to justice, not only as legal practitioners but also as Kenyan citizens concerned about the safety of those who uphold the rule of law.
The advocates mourned the deaths of lawyers Esther Wairimu and Edward Muthee, whose lives, they said, were cut short under circumstances that have raised serious questions and demand urgent answers.
Speaking during the demonstration, Gichuki expressed concern that the incidents had sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity and the wider public.
"While investigations are ongoing, the circumstances surrounding these killings have created deep concern within the legal profession and among Kenyans. If these acts were intended to silence, intimidate or instil fear in advocates carrying out their constitutional duties, then they amount to a direct attack on the rule of law and the administration of justice," she said.
She emphasized that attacks targeting advocates undermine the country's justice system and threaten every Kenyan's constitutional rights.
"An attack on a lawyer is an attack on every Kenyan's right to legal representation, a fair hearing and access to justice. Advocates must be able to discharge their professional duties without fear, threats, harassment or violence," Gichuki added.
The LSK Machakos Chapter called on investigative agencies to carry out prompt, independent, transparent and credible investigations into the deaths of the two advocates, ensure those responsible are brought to justice, and keep the public regularly informed on the progress of the investigations.
The demonstrations formed part of a nationwide call by members of the legal fraternity seeking accountability and enhanced protection for advocates, amid growing concerns over the safety of lawyers in the line of duty.
