Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Thursday officially opened the Eastern Region Secondary School Term Two Games at Makueni Boys High School, marking the start of a three-day sporting extravaganza that has brought together hundreds of students from across the region.
The annual championship features competition in football, volleyball, rugby, badminton and several other disciplines, with outstanding teams earning the opportunity to represent the Eastern Region at the upcoming national secondary school championships.
Addressing participants during the opening ceremony, Governor Mutula challenged the students to embrace discipline, teamwork and fair play, saying school sports remain one of the country's most effective platforms for identifying and nurturing future sporting talent.
He encouraged the young athletes to compete with integrity while using the tournament to build lasting friendships, develop leadership skills and showcase their abilities on a regional stage.
The governor also assured participants, teachers and parents that the county government had put in place adequate measures to guarantee the safety and well-being of everyone attending the games. He announced that ambulances and medical personnel from Makueni County Referral Hospital and Kambi Mawe Dispensary had been deployed to provide round-the-clock emergency medical services throughout the tournament.
Governor Mutula reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting sports development, noting that investing in school competitions plays a vital role in nurturing talent, promoting healthy lifestyles and creating opportunities for young people to excel both in sports and in life.
He was accompanied by County Executive Committee Members Eng. Sebastian Kyoni and Nicholas Nzioka, alongside other county officials, education stakeholders and sports administrators.
The Eastern Region Secondary School Games are expected to conclude after three days of competition, with the winning teams advancing to the national championships.
