A wave of public anger swept through Machakos Town on Monday as a group of furious residents — led predominantly by women — staged a protest outside the Machakos County Assembly, demanding its immediate closure over what they described as “gross misconduct and lack of decorum” by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
The demonstrators accused the MCAs of abandoning their mandate to serve the public, instead engaging in divisive politics and disgraceful infighting. The crowd, visibly enraged, chanted slogans and carried placards condemning the assembly’s leadership and demanding accountability.
Tensions escalated when the protesters attempted to force their way into the assembly compound to eject the MCAs. However, a heavy deployment of police officers blocked their advance, maintaining a tense standoff at the assembly gates.
Earlier in the day, chaos erupted inside the assembly chamber when rival factions of MCAs clashed during a morning session. The altercation turned physical, forcing the Speaker, Ann Kiusya, to flee for her safety. The session was subsequently suspended and the assembly temporarily closed.
As of press time, tension continued to simmer both inside and outside the assembly premises, drawing curious onlookers and disrupting normalcy in the town.
Residents are now calling for urgent intervention by relevant authorities to restore order and ensure the MCAs refocus on their legislative duties.
