Tensions boiled over at the Machakos County Assembly today as a physical altercation broke out among Members of County Assembly (MCAs), just moments after the House resumed sittings following a prolonged recess.

The morning session, which had started on a calm note, quickly descended into chaos when irate members from the majority side interrupted Speaker Ann Kiusya’s communication from the chair. The Speaker had just announced receiving a letter allegedly authored by Wiper Party Secretary General, sparking outrage across the floor.

Adding fuel to the fire was the formal announcement of a leadership shakeup on the minority side. Mathatani MCA Francis Kavyu was named the new Minority Leader, replacing Judas Mbili Ndawa. The reshuffle appears to have further fractured an already divided House.

As tempers flared, MCAs were seen exchanging kicks and blows, forcing Speaker Kiusya to flee the chambers for her own safety. The session was abruptly adjourned.

The Assembly has been closed for over two months prior to today’s sitting, following similar scenes of disorder. A faction of MCAs has been pushing for Speaker Kiusya’s impeachment, while her supporters remain firmly in her corner.

Just last week, during Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s empowerment program in Machakos, Speaker Kiusya reaffirmed her unwavering support for the national government — a stance that may have further deepened political rifts within the Assembly.

The unfolding drama signals a deepening political crisis at the county level, with governance taking a back seat as leadership wrangles dominate the House.
