Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has rejected the High Court’s decision upholding his impeachment and announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal. He said he remains dissatisfied with the judgment and will pursue further legal action in a bid to overturn the decision.
At the same time, Gachagua has outlined an intensified political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring his commitment to uniting opposition forces behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
He said he will seek to mobilise his supporters and engage key political allies, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, in efforts to consolidate opposition support around a consensus flag bearer. Gachagua maintained that a united opposition would significantly strengthen its chances in the next general election.
He further announced that he will camp in Wamunyoro for 45 days starting Monday to conduct wide-ranging consultations on the formula for selecting a single opposition presidential candidate. According to him, the discussions will bring together key stakeholders as the opposition moves toward building consensus on a unified ticket.
Gachagua also said he would abide by the outcome of the coalition’s internal decision-making process, noting that he could only be on the ballot in the August 10, 2027 General Election if the agreed formula within the United Alternative Government favours his candidature.
Separately, the former Deputy President has rejected the KSh 50 million compensation awarded by the court, describing it as an insult and a violation of the Constitution. He said the award does not adequately address the issues raised in his case and vowed to continue pursuing justice through legal channels.
