The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of activist Erick Omondi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, June 5, 2026, in connection with alleged offences linked to recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.

In a statement, the DCI said the arrest was carried out by detectives from DCI Central working jointly with officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) Nairobi Region following what it described as credible intelligence gathered during ongoing investigations.

According to the agency, Omondi was apprehended upon arrival at JKIA and has since been taken to the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters, where he is recording a statement as detectives process him for arraignment in court.

The arrest forms part of broader investigations into incidents that occurred during recent demonstrations against fuel prices in Nairobi. The DCI noted that several other suspects linked to the same incidents were arrested earlier and arraigned in court on May 18, 2026.

While reaffirming citizens' constitutional right to assemble, picket and demonstrate peacefully, the investigative agency emphasized that such freedoms must be exercised within the law.

"The Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and protest. However, any criminal acts committed under the guise of demonstrations or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law," the DCI said.

The agency further warned that it would continue pursuing all individuals suspected of involvement in unlawful activities during protests, maintaining that no offender would evade justice.

The arrest is expected to intensify public debate over the handling of protests and the enforcement of law and order during demonstrations.
