Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka have renewed their political alliance, pledging to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Addressing a charged crowd in Emali town, Makueni County, the leaders accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of corruption and electoral manipulation, and vowed to safeguard the democratic process.
The former Deputy President Gachagua reiterated his criticisms of the Ruto government, alleging rampant graft within the administration.
“This government is neck-deep in corruption. Kenyans are suffering while a few individuals are looting public resources with impunity,” Gachagua said. “We are coming together not for personal gain, but to rescue the country from poor leadership.”
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the sentiments, emphasizing that the opposition would not tolerate electoral malpractice in the next polls.
He cast doubt on the credibility of the newly constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), claiming it was skewed in favour of President Ruto.
“We will not allow another fraudulent election. The IEBC as currently formed cannot be trusted to deliver a credible election,” Kalonzo declared. “We will stand firm and ensure that every vote counts in 2027.”
In what appeared to be a message directed at ongoing overtures by government-allied leaders, Gachagua appealed to Kalonzo to ignore calls to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He urged the Kamba community to turn out in large numbers and register as voters, saying their numbers could be decisive in the 2027 polls.
“Don’t be swayed by empty promises. Stand your ground, Kalonzo. Together we can chart a new path for this country,” said Gachagua.
Kalonzo also took a swipe at Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accusing him of being used by State House to sow discord between him and Gachagua, and to create ethnic divisions.
“Mutuse is being used by forces in the Ruto administration to drive a wedge between the Kamba and Kikuyu communities. We must reject such schemes meant to divide Kenyans,” Kalonzo said.
The two leaders have since taken their campaign trail to Mombasa County, where they were accompanied by several Members of Parliament and Senators aligned with their respective presidential ambitions.
Their renewed unity is seen as an early attempt to consolidate opposition support ahead of the 2027 showdown with President Ruto.
With political temperatures rising and alliances beginning to take shape, the battle for 2027 appears to be heating up much earlier than anticipated
